As some of you may be aware, we had a visit from The F Word earlier this year to help culinary cruise missile Janet Street-Porter produce her own ice cream flavour.
Janet spent a whole day at Delph House Farm creating her own unique flavour of ice cream - ‘Janet’s Hot Stuff’ made with Bird’s Eye Chillies (small, extra hot chillies) grown in her own North Yorkshire garden and milk from her Dexter cows.
Janet followed the full ice cream production process, from mixing her Dexter milk with cream from the Yummy Yorkshire’s Holstein herd, to pasteurisation, churning and freezing. In addition to her chilli flavour, Janet also experimented with further home-grown ingredients including blackcurrant, lavender and mint.
The chilli flavour was the clear winner though - initially the taste is deceptive and you can only taste natural ice cream but then the full force of the chillies develops and blows your socks off. It’s a hell of a taste sensation and not for the faint-hearted!
After a full day’s filming, we sent Janet home with several tubs of her ice cream plus some Yummy Yorkshire flavours to sample including Rhubarb & Custard, Lizzie’s Eton Mess and the award-winning Lou’s Liquorice.
Unfortunately our sequence will not feature in the current series of The F Word due to the restaurant competition element taking up more airtime than anticipated but it has been kept for future consideration.
You can also come and sample Janet’s innovative ice cream flavour at the Yummy Yorkshire ice cream parlour, where a limited edition ‘Chilly Chilly’ version of the ice cream is currently on sale. Dare you try it? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the flavour and look forward to seeing you.
